About the Colour Contrast Checker
What is colour contrast and why does it matter?
Colour contrast is the difference in brightness between text and its background. Low contrast makes text hard to read, especially on phones outdoors and for people with low vision.
What contrast ratio does WCAG require?
WCAG AA requires at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. AAA requires 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text.
Can I check my whole palette at once?
Yes. Enter 2–6 colours and the tool tests every text and background combination, and shows how the palette looks with common types of colour blindness.
Is the contrast checker free?
Yes. It is free with instant results, and you can get a contrast report with suggested fixes by email.
